Math Support for Pace’s Rigorous Coursework

Pace’s advanced mathematics courses require students to apply earlier concepts with increasing flexibility. These courses can move quickly and often assume fluency with algebra, trigonometry, and mathematical notation. When any part of that foundation is incomplete, even a capable student may struggle as the material becomes more abstract.

A student may understand each procedure when it is taught individually, but struggle to determine which method applies when a problem is presented differently. In other cases, the current difficulty may begin with an earlier weakness in algebraic manipulation, functions, equations, or mathematical notation.

Advanced Math Tutoring:

We provide tutoring across all high school and college-level mathematics, including the advanced courses offered at Pace Academy. Our team includes tutors with mathematics degrees and experience supporting demanding courses such as Precalculus Honors, Analysis Honors, AP Calculus AB and BC, Calculus Honors, Discrete Mathematics, and Multivariable Calculus.

Many families come to us after working with tutors who were unable to support these higher-level courses. We have taught Pace students and understand not only how to solve the problems they encounter, but how to teach the underlying mathematics. This is especially important in Precalculus and Precalculus Honors, which follow Pace’s curriculum rather than the AP Precalculus exam. Our teaching methods extend well beyond high school coursework into upper-level college mathematics.

  • Sessions begin with the material the student is currently learning. As we review the student’s work and listen to their reasoning, we identify earlier concepts that may be interfering with the new material. Those gaps are addressed alongside the current course so the student does not continue encountering the same difficulty in different forms.

  • Our first session introduces foundational concepts to assist in what the student is already learning. During this initial session, we learn what concepts are strong and what concepts might be holding a student back. These deficits are addressed in tandem with the current course.

  • When it’s necessary, yes. Homework assignments are often easier than tests. We present our students with problems significantly more complex than the ones they are used to seeing to ensure a complete understanding of each concept. Oftentimes, assignments may not include enough repetition for a student to truly grasp the unit, making it difficult to isolate what they aren’t understanding. Our tutors provide additional problem sets, written by Jacob Busby, when a concept needs to be more closely examined.

  • Meeting with a teacher is valuable for clarifying a recent lesson, assignment, or assessment. Recurring private tutoring provides additional time to examine patterns across the student’s work, revisit prerequisite material, and practice problems selected for that student’s particular needs. We encourage students to use the resources available at school in addition to their tutoring sessions.

  • The amount and pace of improvement depend on the student’s starting grade, the extent of the underlying gaps, how often we meet consistently, and how many graded assignments remain in the course. Many AnyThink students have improved by one or two letter grades over the course of a semester, with some making more substantial turnarounds.

    A student may begin demonstrating stronger understanding within the first few sessions, but the course average usually takes longer to change because it includes work completed before tutoring began. After several sessions, we can give the family a more informed assessment of what improvement is realistic and how long it may take.

  • Students meet at the same reserved time once a week. A consistent schedule allows us to identify issues before they surface and anticipate which concepts may cause difficulty based on the student’s strengths and weaknesses. Students with substantial gaps or an immediate course concern may meet more frequently for a short period of time.

  • We provide in-home tutoring for Pace families throughout Buckhead, Vinings, Sandy Springs, and surrounding Atlanta communities. Meeting at home allows the student to work on their course materials without adding another commute to the school day.
